Interactive: Mark Catesby and the Hog-nose Snake
This is a scientific illustration.
While Mark Catesby, the artist, wanted it to look very nice and interesting, he was focused on showing the plants and animals he painted exactly the way they looked.
Before cameras were invented, artists had the responsibility of showing people what things looked like in other parts of the world. Scientists depended on the accuracy of natural history illustrators.
